Using Cove Molding To Waterproof Your Colorado Garage Floor
Many of our clients, especially in the Colorado Rockies, track snow onto their garage floor during the winter months. Along with the snow that melts off your car comes corrosive de-icing salts. When the salts get under your walls they start a rapid deterioration of the concrete, wood beams and drywall. We’ve seen extensive water damage in basements from water that came through the wall edges in the garage.
A simple way we waterproof the garage is by adding cove molding along the edges where the walls meet the floor. The moldings come in 4, 6 and 8 inch heights and are caulked at the seams. When we apply the floor coating, we bring it up to the top edge of the cove molding. The result is a seamless basin preventing water from getting under the walls.
We do the same at steps entering your home from the garage. The photographs above show examples. Once we install the moldings, bringing the coating up along the steps of your garage floor, any water that gets inside can easily be wisked away with a neoprine squeegee.
The result is permanent and cove molding does not expand or contract so there is no risk of cracks.
